Leaving Sisters

As we continued to move through March, the snow was slowly beginning to recede. We had a tentative date for leaving the lovely Bend/Sisters Garden RV Resort of April 1st but it all depended on how clear the roads were on the Santiam Pass over the Cascade Mountains. 

Our original plan to stay for three had turned into a four month long stay.

The reason we had stayed so long in Sisters was because of the snowy, icy weather and the concern the trailer would make it over the pass. The reports over Christmas said the roads were slippery and treacherous. We kept checking the webcams on the US20 to see what the conditions were like. We just did not want to risk a serious accident. And so we waited out our entire winter in Sisters, Oregon and fortunately the site could accommodate our change of plans.

Fortunately for us, we stayed in Sisters longer than planned and found our darling Ollie.

As April 1st approached, Kim and I drove up to the pass to see first hand what the roads were like. We did not anticipate the banks of up to 20 feet of snow at the height of the pass. However the roads had been salted and ploughed and if the day time temperatures reached 40 degrees or more, we felt pretty confident we could maneuver the trailer over the mountains.

We checked the weather every day and made contingency plans to stay longer if necessary, but on April 1st the sun was up, the sky was blue and the temps were in our favor and so we said a fond and grateful farewell to Sisters (and Cibelli's Pizza) and headed off towards the Oregon coast and our next site, Whaler's Rest in Newport.
