Date Day

Kim and I set off together, just the two of us, on a "Date Day" to explore the Northern California coast line and take advantage of the sunshine, blue skies and crisp, cool air. Henry opted to stay home, have a long lie in, connect with friends and play video games. An all around win-win.

We set off on the US101 heading south and almost immediately found ourselves driving through the giant Redwoods that were standing to attention and affectionately hugging the road. We stopped at Wilson Creek and spent some time just basking in the autumn sunshine watching the brown pelicans bobbing about on the breaking waves. We walked the beach, combing the shoreline for treasures. In the misty distance we could see some sea stacks hanging out, close to land, but enjoying their salty solitude. It was such a beautiful morning.

Our plan to hike the Yurok Loop Trail was thwarted as the car park was closed and being re-surfaced with smelly tarmac. Instead we drove up to Klamath Lookout Point up a very windy hill. I took out my binoculars hoping to see some humpback or grey whales on their migration route up north. After seeing that incredible breaching humpback when we were in Big Sur, I have been on the lookout for more whales. We did not see any whales but we stayed a while for a drink and a quick snack. On the way back down the mountain and then again as we crossed the Klamath River, we saw many elk grouped socially together for a drink in the river.

We stopped for a picnic lunch and then set off to Klamath Beach and to find an old World War II Radar Farmhouse that acted as a secret lookout station, watching over the Pacific for hidden subs or hostile ships. 

Again, it was a beautiful drive and we came across an adult female deer with her baby. They stopped and stared at us and we stopped and stared right back at them. 

We drove a whole circuit of the beach road up and over the cliffs. We got out many times to take in the view of the Klamath estuary and enormous sandbank from the bluffs. We spotted a few seals in the water but couldn't make them out very clearly as we were quite a distance away.

After a long and lazy afternoon taking in the incredible views we headed back to the trailer and Henry.
